When you're a small business owner or a freelancer, the daily grind can get overwhelming and lead your thoughts, and your work productivity, astray.
Like most people, I've struggled with time management. And like most freelancers and business owners, I don't work in a “normal” 9-5 setup. That means I'm in charge of my work productivity. And that's the first thing you have to realize – that you're responsible for how much you're accomplishing each day.
Need a hand in keeping diligent? Follow these guidelines for optimal work productivity.
Oftentimes you'll be working on several different projects at once, sometimes with different clients. It's tough to keep on top of all of it without proper organization. The old-fashioned to do list works wonders. I like to make a list for daily to do’s, a weekly list for larger projects, and a monthly list for work-related goals. You're much more likely to achieve a goal if you write it down.
Secondly, you should keep a log in a spreadsheet with all of your ongoing projects. Track the client, the task, the time you've spent on it, and your fee. It's the best way to see what's worth your time and what isn't. A big chunk of change can go over your head unless you break down the time spent. It helps to have the numbers there in front of you, from knowing how long a future project may take to recognizing when you're being underpaid for a certain task.
Having trouble with task management? Nuvro can help.
All that time you spend on social media or making the perfect playlist is wasted time, and that time has a direct correlation with your bank account. If you need to block yourself from Facebook, do it. If you need to put your phone on silent, I recommend it. Even if you're not working on anything in particular, your creative juices will really flow without the interruptions. Where are you the most motivated to accomplish tasks? Is it at your local coffee shop? Outside? At a home office? In a rented office? Whatever gives you the least amount of distraction, that's where you need to be.
Many of us need a little help to remain focused. Meditation each day can bring your mind to a centered place. It's relaxing, but it's also a mental exercise in concentration. Try the Calm app to get started.
Take Care of Yourself
Take well-deserved breaks. If you beat yourself up about getting things done and don't take any time for yourself throughout the day, you're actually going to counteract your productivity. An extra-long workday is going to make you stressed, tired, and unlikely to stay motivated.
A ten minute break twice a day won't mess up your schedule, but it can do wonders for your mental health – and if your mental health is taken care of, your efficiency will skyrocket. Just make sure those breaks don't get so time-consuming that you're back to square one.
Practice Efficiency for More Profitability
These tips may seem like extra steps to add to your workload, but once you're in the habit of tracking and staying organized and refreshed, it becomes second nature. These simple tools will allow you a better schedule, an easier workload, and a more profitable business.
