Through these websites, many of them free, you can acquire the knowledge necessary to gain a new skillset or expand your mastery of an existing skill.

Online Education

Coursera : Some of the most distinguished teachers in the world present the courses found here. You can study for free courses taught at a wide variety of prestigious universities such as Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Duke, and more. Subjects include business, project management, data science, computer science, and social science, among others. Popular classes include “Machine learning,” “Learning How to Learn,” “Algorithms, Part I,” and “Python, Getting Started,” to name a few.

Coursmos:  Offers micro-courses you can take at your convenience, on any device. Allows companies to build training programs for their employees. Enables online education businesses to rapidly create their own feature-rich websites.

Highbrow:  Provides daily 5-minute lessons sent to your inbox each morning. Highbrow’s email subscription service offers courses which last 10 days, with each course divided into 5-minute daily increments. The courses are delivered in text format. The service is free, with a Premium tier content available at $7 a month or $48 per year.

Skillshare:  Offers thousands of streamed classes online on a variety of subjects, including business, technology, photography, film, culinary, writing, and more. Over 16,000 classes are available.

Udemy : Online learning portal with more than 45,000 courses presented by expert instructors. Courses can be experienced at your own pace, from any device. Instructors can create training content of their own in a customized learning platform. Course design tools are available to assist in the process.

This is the largest marketplace for online education, with millions of students around the world. Instructors can earn money from the courses they teach while also building their personal brand.

Platzi : Classes taught by top industry leaders via live streaming on subjects such as marketing, design, and programming.

Treehouse: The site teaches web design and coding in HTML, CSS, iPhone apps, Javascript, and Python, among other subjects. Over 1,000 videos on business, coding, and other topics are available. Interactive Code Challenges and quizzes are used to test your skills. As your skills progress you earn badges to indicate the skills you have acquired.

DataMonkey: Helps you build analytical skills while having fun. Uses the learn-by-doing method in combination with game mechanics. Instead of lectures, the site immerses you in a working environment to learn data analysis. Cases studies are provided with each course to aid the immersion of the learning experience.

Lingvist:  Provides courses to enable you to learn a new language in 200 hours. Available courses include:

The site’s workouts are designed to boost the creative and intellectual capacity of your brain. With 25,000 lessons on a wide variety of subjects, the site’s goal is to help you be happy and healthy by giving your brain a daily science-based workout. Content comes from sources such as TED, The Daily Curio, Science Friday, Curious Courses, and more.

lynda.com:  Online educational site that enables individuals to study technology, creative, and business subjects. Offers over 6,029 classes covering these subjects with industry experts as instructors. A free 30-day trial is available.

Codecademy : Free interactive learning site that helps people learn how to code. Over 25 million learners across the world have used Codecademy. Skills taught include:

CodeCombat: Teaches computer science via playing games. Serves as a “classroom in-a-box” for the purpose of online computer science education. BaseRails: Teaches learners to work with Ruby on Rails as well as other web technologies. Memrise: This free site enables you to learn vocabulary using flashcards. Over 285 million words have been learned using the site. Courses are available in more than 200 languages. Supported on Android and iOS operating systems. Allows you to build your own courses using multimedia flashcards.

TED-Ed: Features curated educational videos on a wide variety of topics. Enables you to create a lesson based on any TED-Ed video.
